Norway’s first sports arena with Eaton xStorage Buildings

" We want to be a driving force to ensure more climate friendly solutions for Norwegian sports facilities. The energy storage system at Bislett stadium enables us to utilize the solar production better, and the control system will reduce our energy expenditure".

Eli Grimsby, Director of Municipal Undertaking for Cultural and Sport Facilities.

The sports stadium now benefits from the installation of an Eaton xStorage Buildings system that includes a 100-kW power conversion system and three racks with 30 Eaton battery packs made up of second-life Nissan LEAF battery modules. This is a great example of circular economy. The 1100 m2 of solar production at Bislett Stadium was implemented in the summer of 2018 and has a potential of producing 150 000 kWh each year. The energy storage system currently installed can store up to 109 kWh but it can be easily upscaled to match increasing needs in the future.

Ensuring back-up power supply and peak shaving while using more self-generated solar energy.

The stadium wanted to invest in an energy storage solution that would enable them to shave peaks in energy consumption and usage, utilize the solar production in a smarter way and ensure there is a back-up power supply for the stadium and the events they host. In a worst-case scenario, and during peak periods, an outage in power supply during a fixture, event or concert, for example, would not only prove disastrous for the Bislett stadium, but also for the areas and people surrounding the sports facility who rely on the grid’s power supply.

This way of managing stored energy and distributing it responsibly supports the grid’s power supply, making it robust and ensuring stability. The installation in the Bislett stadium demonstrates environmental responsibility, and it is expected that more energy storage systems will be installed in Norway in the future.
